Bearded Dragon Habitat Setup: Tank, Heat and Lighting Basics
Heat and UVB lighting are the foundation of bearded dragon health. Get them right from the start.
Bearded dragons are popular, calm reptiles, but they depend on the right heat and light to stay healthy. Getting the habitat right matters more than any other part of their care.
Enclosure
Adults do best in a large enclosure, commonly about four feet long or bigger. Choose secure, well-ventilated housing with a locking lid or front opening.
Heat
- Create a warm basking area, typically around 100 to 110 degrees Fahrenheit (38 to 43 degrees Celsius) for adults.
- Keep a cooler side so your dragon can regulate their temperature.
- Use thermometers at both ends, and follow guidance from a reptile veterinarian for juveniles.
UVB lighting
A proper UVB light helps bearded dragons use calcium and stay healthy. Replace tubes on the manufacturer’s schedule, even if they still glow, because UVB output fades.
Substrate and decor
Tile, paper or other solid surfaces are simple and easy to clean. Add climbing branches, a hide and a flat basking rock.
Feeding
Young dragons eat mostly insects, and adults eat more greens. Ask a reptile veterinarian about calcium and vitamin supplements.
