Horse Grooming Basics for Beginners
A simple routine of brushes, hoof care and safe handling keeps your horse comfortable.
Grooming keeps a horse comfortable and healthy, and it is also a quiet way to build trust and check for injuries.
Tools you will need
- A rubber curry comb to loosen dirt and hair
- A stiff brush to flick dirt away
- A soft brush for the face and finishing
- A mane and tail comb
- A hoof pick
Work in order
Start with the curry comb in circles, then use the stiff brush in the direction of hair growth, and finish with the soft brush. Go gently over bony areas.
Pick the hooves
Clean each hoof from heel to toe, and look for stones, cracks, heat or a bad smell. Ask your farrier or vet if you notice anything unusual.
Stay safe
- Tie your horse with a quick-release knot or use a safe grooming area.
- Stand beside your horse, and speak so they know where you are.
- Avoid standing directly behind them.
Take the time to check for cuts, swelling and sore spots while you groom.
