Maine Coon Cats: Size, Personality and Care
Gentle giants with shaggy coats, Maine Coons need roomy homes and regular grooming.
Maine Coons are among the largest domesticated cat breeds, known for their shaggy coats, tufted ears and gentle, sociable personalities.
Size
Adult males commonly weigh around 13 to 18 pounds, and females are usually a bit smaller. Maine Coons grow slowly, often not reaching full size until three to five years old.
Personality
They are often described as friendly, curious and good with families and other pets. Many enjoy following their people around and playing with water or toys.
Coat care
Their long, water-resistant coat needs combing a few times a week to prevent mats, especially around the belly, behind the ears and in the britches. Expect more shedding in spring.
Health notes
- Large breeds benefit from good nutrition throughout their long growth period.
- Ask breeders about screening for heart disease and hip problems.
- Schedule regular dental and veterinary checkups.
