How to Choose the Right Cat Litter and Litter Box
The right box, litter and location can prevent accidents and keep your cat happy.
Litter habits are one of the biggest factors in a happy cat and a fresh-smelling home. A few simple choices make a big difference.
Pick the right box
The box should be roomy, ideally about one and a half times the length of your cat, with sides low enough for easy entry. Senior cats and kittens may need a lower entrance.
Choose a litter your cat likes
Many cats prefer unscented, fine-grained clumping litter. If you switch brands, mix the new litter in gradually. Strong perfumes can put cats off.
Location and number
- Put boxes in quiet, easy-to-reach spots, away from food and noisy appliances.
- A common guideline is one box per cat plus one extra.
- Do not tuck the box into a dark corner your cat has to pass a scary spot to reach.
Keep it clean
Scoop at least once a day, top up the litter and wash the box with mild, unscented soap on a regular schedule.
When to call the vet
If a cat suddenly avoids the box, strains, cries while urinating or passes blood, contact your veterinarian promptly. Straining to urinate can be an emergency, especially in male cats.
